Black Mountain, North Carolina is known for its charming downtown, scenic mountain views, great food scene, and vibrant arts community. Beyond the well-trodden paths, though, there are hidden gems that only locals and seasoned visitors tend to know. Here are three of those gems that offer a special perspective on this lovely mountain town.

Tom Haney Artist Studio

Automata art, also known as mechanical sculpture or kinetic art, involves creating mechanical sculptures that tell a story through their movements. Tom Haney, one of the world's most renowned artists who specializes in automata, creates from his studio in Black Mountain. One reviewer said, “Haney is one of the best artists in his field and yet he remains easily accessible and genuinely available to discuss his work.” You can visit Haney in his studio, but please contact him via his website a few days in advance to schedule an appointment.

Thirteen Pennies Café

Down Old US Highway 70 in nearby Swannanoa, you’ll find Thirteen Pennies Café, a charming eatery that serves made-from-scratch breakfast and lunch. Beyond its culinary offerings, the café provides valuable training and job experience for aspiring youth enrolled in the Black Mountain Home’s Culinary Arts Apprenticeship Program. While you’re there, enjoy a cup of their Honduras roast, a direct-trade, specialty-grade coffee grown at high elevations and stop by the Mountain Home Thrift Store: Cheryl’s Place. Proceeds benefit the Black Mountain Home and an orphanage in Honduras where the coffee is grown.

Lookout Brewery

Lookout Brewing Company is a don’t-miss destination for craft beer lovers. This small, family-owned brewery prides itself on brewing high-quality beers that reflect the spirit of the mountains. The taproom is cozy, with a welcoming vibe that makes visitors feel right at home. Don’t miss trying a flight to sample a range of their creative brews, like the Lookout Pale Ale or seasonal specialties inspired by local flavors.

These hidden gems capture the diversity of Black Mountain’s charm, from its arts and history to its natural beauty and craft beer scene. Whether you’re looking to connect with local artists, enjoy a peaceful lake view, or relax with a handcrafted beer, these lesser-known spots in Black Mountain will make your trip all the more memorable.
